Jobs at Vector Etch

Our laser cutting and engraving business is growing and we’re so excited for the opportunity to add to our team here at Vector Etch.

Laser Assistant

We’re looking for a new team member to assist us with running the lasers, and be a fall-back option for if/when someone is sick. One of our priorities here is keeping the lasers running, and when normal human things happen (like a sick day), it can make a big difference. The successful applicant here will win big brownie points if they can meet the points listed below for ‘This job is for you if…’.
What’s On Offer:
  • Casual shifts, minimum 8 hours per week (likely Monday & Tuesday, 10am on-wards). On-call additional shifts when needed. It’s possible this could be flexible to be more or less hours; let us know what’s ideal for you and we’ll see what we can do.
  • Main role is operating the lasers (after completing training), quality control, packing and posting orders, assisting around the studio in any way that needs doing (could include cleaning).
  • 6 week trial period.
  • Important to understand: this role is production heavy, requires standing and mobility, and does not include design work.
Good to know:
  • We liken this role to a barista in a fast paced environment: you have orders with specific requests, that need to be done with an attention to detail, and be aware of quality and safety. In the best scenario, there’s always more orders to work through (i.e. there is not a quiet period or ‘end point’ of the orders).
  • Once trained, you’ll work quite solo. It’s not a particularly social job (the nature of the manufacture style work means headphones on, head down to concentrate).
  • Experience with lasers and our services is desirable, but not necessary.
  • We’ll collect applications over December and will look at conducting interviews in January.
This job is for you if:
  • Your schedule is flexible. You MUST be available for on-call work with short notice to cover shifts.
  • You enjoy work that is standing and moving around.
  • You enjoy perpetually ticking things off lists, and welcome new lists with a smile.
  • You can multi-task exceptionally well with ease and are happy to work independently.
  • You have a focused attention to detail.
Application Process:

Our process is straight forward, but does require effort on your part.

  • Submit your application along with a resume and cover letter to vectoretchella@gmail.com. Your cover letter should highlight if you meet all of the requirements noted above, as well as describe your current employment and reason/s for wanting to change.
  • Upon receiving your application we will send you an email questionnaire.
  • We’ll review all replies to the questionnaire and invite suitable applications for a professional formal interview in our studio.
  • The most suitable candidate will perform a 6 week trial period, with the opportunity for on-going work if successful.

Administration: Quotes and General Enquiries

We’re looking for the right person to monitor our primary inbox. Think of it like being a receptionist, except you only communicate via email and have the opportunity to help people make their exciting laser cut and laser engraved projects. You will be an important part of assisting our customers, and they will adore you for your service in ways that can bring great job satisfaction.

This is a part-time, permanent position and is available for an immediate start for the right candidate (will wait for any notice periods as required). While we would like this position to be filled asap, there is no closing date for this role – we are looking for the ideal candidate and will conduct interviews until we find the right fit for us.

What’s On Offer:
  • Approx. 20 hours per week, spaced over Monday to Friday (4 hours per day). Starting hours will be 8am – 12 noon, but may be negotiated as there is some flexibility here.
  • Note: there will be a 6 week trial period as casual employment, which will be reviewed and transition to part-time employment if the trial is successful.
  • There may be opportunities for expanding to full-time hours in the future, depending on your wants and needs, and pairing those with that of the company.
Your main responsibilities and duties will include:
  • The main role of this position is to provide quotes to customers via email, based on their file/s submitted for laser cutting and engraving. This includes checking each file for errors, calculating prices and responding in a timely manner. You will be expected to be able to remain focused at the computer for some time.
  • Important to understand: this role is email heavy and does not include design work. You will likely not personally use the laser machines.
  • Secondary role of this position is to reply to other email general enquiries, which may lead to work (assisting with sales and helping customers find the best method for their vision).
  • You may also be assigned to packing orders, if time permits.
The successful applicant will have:
  • A natural inclination towards acts of kindness, a strong desire for helping others, and enthusiasm for sharing information and resources.
  • The ability to use a PC computer (including email and excel). This is non-negotiable.
  • The basic ability to use Adobe Illustrator OR the willingness to self-learn before your work starts. This is non-negotiable.
  • The ability to stay focused at the computer independently for the duration of a shift, including being able to self-manage tasks and deadlines.
  • Experience in a similar role is desirable, but not necessary.
  • Experience as a customer ordering laser cut files is desirable, but not necessary (such as if you have been a Vector Etch customer ordering custom vector files, this will greatly help your application as you already have some insight to what we do).
  • An attention to detail.
  • Great written communication skills.
  • Application Process:

    Operations Manager

Our business is emerging in a fast growing industry and we are seeking the right kind of manager to take us to the next ‘level’ of organisation and productivity, while maintaining a positive work environment. The team here follows procedures to function mostly independently, but as any good manager will know, it’s the sequence of little tasks that need to be managed for everyone to be able to do their tasks to their best abilities.

This is an exciting opportunity for the right person. This role can provide many areas for personal and professional growth, with a salary and bonuses that reflect your enthusiasm and hard work respectively.

This is a full-time, permanent position and is available for an immediate start for the right candidate (will wait for any notice periods as required). While we would like this position to be filled asap, there is no closing date for this role – we are looking for the ideal candidate and will conduct interviews until we find the right fit for us.

Important: This is a new role for this company. The company owners have been collectively managing and running the business and will hand this role over completely to the successful applicant. We will train you, but expect you to train us also.

    • Managing machinery and materials. Including oversight of the laser machinery and purchasing. This is central to the job.
    • Managing personnel (a team of 4-6). Including determining needs, hiring employees (if needed), overseeing assignments of employees and planning staff development.
    • Being an exciting leader that boosts team and workplace moral. Including organising incentives, features and events to happen within the workplace to enrich the company culture. Our workplace environment is important to us, and will be for you also.
    • Show awareness of internal and external customer needs, including managing day-to-day operations as well as planning and managing future projects.
    • Organisation of workplace and procedures. Including establishing procedures and implementing these procedures in the workplace.
    • Assisting around the studio in any way that is needed on a daily basis. This could include any aspects of the business such as emails, quotes, cleaning, operating the lasers, packing orders, talking to customers, etc.
    The successful application will:
    • Have a minimum of 1 year experience working independently with Trotec laser machines (ideally the Speedy 100 and Speedy 360 models). You should be able to proficiently operate and troubleshoot to run the machines, where needed.
    • Have a minimum of 2-3 years in a management role in a similar work environment (e.g. manufacture and production, with a team of 5-10).
    • Be able to use Adobe Illustrator OR have a willingness to learn before commencing employment.
    • Have the ability to recommend how to improve the company. Such as be able to give examples of past experience identifying weaknesses in production and workplaces and implementing strategies to improve efficiency.
    • Be available to work Monday to Friday, from 8am – 4pm.
    • Have reliable transport to the studio in Yeerongpilly each day.
    • Be looking for a long-term career at this company, that is solely focused on this role (such as the right candidate isn’t seeing this role as a stepping stone OR seeing this role as access to facilitate a personal business).
    • Excellent (and polite) written and verbal communication skills.
    • Be able to use a PC computer.
    • Have read through our website to understand what the company does.
    • These requirements are non-negotiable and must be met for an application to be reviewed.

    What’s on Offer:
    • An attractive salary package to match your level of skills and experience.
    • Quarterly performance (sales) based percentage bonuses.
    Application Process:

    • Upon receiving your application we will send you an email questionnaire.
    • We’ll review all replies to the questionnaire and invite suitable applications for a professional formal interview in our studio.
    • The most suitable candidate will perform a 4 week trial period (negotiable), with the opportunity to come onto a full-time contract at the end of the trial period.
    • A 3-6 month training period will follow until the operations manager can independently run the business. At the end of the training period, the operations manager will be the leader at the workplace and the company owner will work remotely on the company.
